Choose Your Next Book

How do you choose a book to read?

  • What did you read last that you liked?
  • What type of stories interest you?
  • If you can't think in terms of books, what activities do you enjoy?
  • What kind of mood are you in?

These types of questions all help us to choose new books that might be interesting. Let's look at some tools to help expand options and narrow choices . . .

Reviews

My go-to resource for book reviews written by real people, readers like us, is Goodreads. Some reviews can be spoilers for book content and some reviewers are too vocal, in words and images, about their opinions, but taken as a whole, with some search skills, it can provide solid information about books we may be interested in. One useful tool on Goodreads is the hundreds of lists provided that include titles with similar characteristics. One of these list pages is focused on new releases in Young Adult literature.

For more book lists and reader reviews along with published professional, or what is called 'Editorial Reviews,' take a look at Books on Amazon. Obviously, this is also a resource to purchase new and used books.

In our community

Need to know if our school library has a book you are interested in? Check for yourself in our Middle-High School Destiny Catalog. We belong to a group of almost 200 other school libraries in the greater Rochester region (including our own elementary school) that exchange books to meet the needs of our readers so even if the book doesn't show up in our catalog, there is a good chance we can find it somewhere or may even be able to purchase a copy for our library if the title seems appropriate. Contact Mr. Lloyd or Mrs. Gardner for these requests.

For an alternative local book borrowing option, the Warsaw Public Library has a good collection and library loan option with other public libraries in Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming, and Livingston Counties.

Need more specific help with book choice?

  • If you have read something you liked and would like another book with similar themes, try out this "What should I read next" tool.
  • Another resource to find books with similar content or themes is the Readers Advisory section on the Book Connection website.
  • If you need to choose books within a certain reading level, this Accelerated Reader Book Finder might be a great tool. To find books by reading level (R, S, T, U, etc), go to the Advanced Search option and narrow the interest level, the reading level, and the topic area or theme (Step-by-step instructions here). This can also be used for Lexile or ATOS level search. In reverse, inputting the title will display the ATOS Level and information about the AR test.
  • Another reading-level search tool is the Lexile Find a Book (FAB) page. This tool begins with Lexile number or range or grade level and narrows by categories (topic or genre). In reverse, inputting the title will display Lexile Level.
  • A cross-reference between different measures of reading level can be found here - ............................................
  • If you need a book with a limited amount of 'offensive language,' sexual references, or violence, consider titles on the lists found on the Rated Reads site. Note that this page may not be updated with current titles.
