Students Prepare School Garden and Learn About Agriculture
Chickens and rabbits and goats...and pigs...Oh, my! Ag Day and Planting Day were hosted at WES on May 22. The morning was filled with educational opportunities for students to learn more about agriculture and related industries. They also spent time in the WES garden, preparing the soil and planting this year’s crops in the raised beds and high tunnel. Students met a variety of new friends, from goats to pigs to chickens. Dr. Ashley Vranich explained her role as a veterinarian at Perry Vet. Doreen and Mary Grace Schenk from Heavenly Valley Farms explained the process of working with wool. Warsaw FFA members, along with advisor Bernadette Harwood, organized a variety of fun activities like toy tractor races.
Thank you to all who helped make the day special for students. Tractor Supply Company in Warsaw donated the corn for the corn sensory bins. Java Farm Supply in North Java brought the Krone chopper. Stephanie Czerniak from Wyoming County Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Ag in the Classroom helped organize the event with the Warsaw FFA. Teachers Jackie Curcio and Nikki Morrissey and the WES Garden Club organized the preparation and planting in the garden. Stephen Cox helped obtain pens for the visiting animals.
